Dates: Oct. 1, 8, 15, 2016
Location: TPS Art Center (2447 N. Los Altos, Tucson, Arizona 85705)

Instructor: Christy Olsen
Format: Demonstration, lecture, & one-on-one instruction provided during hands-on practice.
Level: Beginner to intermediate. All levels are welcome!

Medium: Charcoal
Technique: Drawing from life using Charcoal and some tinted charcoal.
Materials: The instructor will email a material list before the first day of class.


Topics

  • Surfaces - What to use? "Texture" or "smoothness" of the paper affects this medium's look, toned paper versus white paper.
  • Sharpening - how to cut away the wood of a charcoal pencil to customize the tip for the best tonal effects
  • Drawing - Basic drawing concepts on line, shape & value
  • Blending - is especially important for creating flat tones or gradual gradations.
  • Style - loose or painterly versus hyper-realistic or photographic.
  • Manufacturers - not all brands are created equal. Compare and learn what makes them unique.
