Design and composition are the building blocks of the visual arts. Whether drawing or painting, a strong composition will attract attention, engage, and clarify your message to the viewer. This class will cover some of the basic principles of art, simplification, and the Japanese concept of Nōtan (濃淡), which evolved while making woodblock prints using a limited set of dark and light shapes. Taught on location in the classroom at the beautiful Yume Japanese Gardens, you will have a solid understanding of how to simplify your shapes and arrange your values into a pleasing design by the end of this class.
