Painting with Charcoal
(Nov. 2024)

Art Verve Academy

Charcoal is such a versatile medium. You can use charcoal to draw tightly rendered details or bold, expressive marks. Did you know that you can also paint with charcoal?

When mixing charcoal powder with water, you can paint with it in a way that is very similar to watercolor. Charcoal can create beautiful washes, drips and splatters and you can add new layers over dry layers. When the water evaporates, all that is left on the surface is charcoal. Charcoal that you can add to, erase, smudge and draw on. It is a fun way to combine expressive painting techniques with familiar drawing techniques.
