Focus On The Negative
(Dec. 2024)

Lisa Larrabee

Everyone always says to focus on something positive, but sometimes the negative can be way more interesting! Negative space, that is. Negative space (or negative shapes) are the shapes of the intangible space around the tangible objects.

We naturally want to focus on tangible things. For example, the tangible parts of a tree such as the trunk, branches and leaves. However, if you focus on the negative shapes around the tree, you can eliminate many unnecessary details within the tree and focus more on creating a dynamic shape.

Focusing on the design of the negative space will help create a more appealing image. It can also serve as a jumping off point to stylize your art or allow you to lean into design elements abstractly. There is so much to be gained when we spend some time focusing on the negative. You can’t have the positive without the negative!
