Creating emphasis with intention is a vital skill when developing a composition. There are numerous ways to create emphasis to direct a viewer to areas of importance. Hierarchy is also essential to visually rank the areas of importance within the composition.

For example, on stage, you want to be able to spotlight the stars, then the supporting players, and finally, the environment that pulls them together. Learn how to use the principles of emphasis and hierarchy to organize the elements within your composition and be the director of your artwork.

Identifying the hierarchy within your work and directing the viewer by creating emphasis is a powerful skill. Explore a variety of options to create a hierarchy through emphasis. You will have the opportunity to apply what you have learned to develop a thoughtful composition in the style and medium of your choice.

Meets: Monday Nights, 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Location: B.Marie's Atelier & Gallery located in the Bring's Historic Building,

Instructor: Lisa Larrabee
Format: Lecture & demonstration, studio practice with individual feedback, and one-on-one instruction.
Level: All levels are welcome! No experience is needed. Beginners are most welcome!

Medium: Open to all drawing and/or painting mediums.
Technique: Applying studies in emphasis and hierarchy to your composition.
Materials: The instructor will email the materials list before the first day of class. Note that painters must use drop cloths over tabletops. Oil painters are specifically required to use Gamsol or odorless mineral spirits & dispose of their oily rags in a flammable waste can.
